Frequently asked questions.

Q
How long does the Drive tube last.
A
Depends on work it has to do, correct nip setting and speed.
Minimum usually 40,000 cycles (2 x stroke) Max has been in excess of 100K.
Q
How fast can it go?
A
We don't know. You will need to accelerate and decelerate but users have claimed over 10metres per sec with unlimited air supply.
Q
Does the tube support itself?
A
Yes, it is stretched during installation as per fitting instructions.
Q
Which way up do you mount it?
A
Either way is okay, but keep the RolAirMota piston rollers horizontal.
Q
Do I have to keep adjusting the RolAirMota nip setting.
A
No. If set correctly and the lock nut tightened.
Q
What is the maximum working pressure?
A
Normally 8 Bar but 10 is possible dependent upon application.
Q
What happens if I make a mistake on assembly?
A1
Gross over nip of the Drive Tube can damage it and maybe the roller bearings.
A2
Under nip will just stop it working.
A3
Not tensioning the Drive tube will reduce the power output and tube life.
A4
Over tensioning the Drive tube will affect the nip and tube life.
Q
Does dirt, water and rubbish affect it?
A
Not really.
Q
Does air pass between the rollers?
A
Not if the 'Nip' is set correctly.
Q
Can it be used vertically?
A
Yes, or any angle.
Q
How do you control speed and thrust?
A
With flow regulators and/or Pressure regulator.
Q
Is there a max length?
A
29.60  metres.
Q
How much over-travel do you need at the end of the stroke?
A
150mm at each end.
Q
Can the RolAirMota be set up with the rollers vertical?
A
We prefer not.
Q
Does the air have to be clean?
A
No. Water is a lubricant for rubber, but it does not like lots of oil in the air line.
Q
Does it need lubrication?
A
No. Please do not use lubrication in the air or on the roller bearings.
Q
What happens when the tube wears out?
A
The speed is reduced as air begins to pass between the rollers, it will eventually stop completely.
Q
How noisy is it?
A
Only source of noise is the optional power pack and air exhausting. Both can be silenced to below 50 dB.
Q
What happens if one motor is not powerful enough?
A
Check and try to reduce friction on the machine being automated.
A2
Add extra RolAirMotas to run in parallel.
Q
What if I want to stop in mid stroke.
A1
Apply air to both ends, this will equalise pressure and stop the drive.
A2
Cut air off to both ends.
NOTE:
Whilst both these will stop a light load, heavy loads will still have kinetic energy and may continue until this is dissipated.  Dependent upon speed control system employed, A2 may also accelerate without control when air is re-applied. A2 may also be affected by the position of the RolAirMota piston, the longer length of Drive Tube will take extra time to exhaust.
Q
Can it go round corners?
A
Please be free to try anything, it will reduce tube life though.
Q
Is it special Drive tube?
A
Yes, in emergency you can use almost anything, but it may damage the RolAirMota piston and will reduce life and performance.
Q
How many models are there?
A
One. 38mm size.  We are planning a 25mm for late 2011 and maybe a 65mm for 2012.
Q
What are the white side guides for?
A
Keeping the tube away from the sides of the RolAirMota piston. These will wear faster if the Drive Tube is not tensioned properly or the system is running badly mis-aligned. Replace before they wear through
